The tableland of Castelluccio di Norcia is a wonderful place in the Sibillini mountains, very close to the Vettore mountain, between the Regions of Marche and Umbria (central Italy).
It was the bottom of a prehistoric lake and nowadays it is famous for the plantation of a local fine quality of lentils.
This area, which looks like a tipical Mongolian landscape rather than an Italian one, has an elevation of more than 1300 meters and the hieghst point is at the top of the village of Castelluccio di Norcia (1452 M.), which is set on a hill in the north-west side of the tableland.
During the coldest months of the year, the temperature in the upland can reach -30 Celsius degrees and several meters of snow. While during the months of June and July this area is crowded by tourists that appreciate the view and the flowering of poppies, cornflowers, daisis and lentils.

In 1961 local people planted a map of Italy with pine trees, with the aim to celebrate the first 100th Anniversary of the unification of Italy. Nowadays this map is very famous in Italy and it is an icon of this area.
The tableland of Castelluccio di Norcia is just above the villages of Arquata del Tronto, Pescara del Tronto and the other small towns destroyed by the recent earthquakes. Also the village of Castelluccio has been terribly damaged.
Even if the situaton is still complicated, local people have started planting lentils these days.
Thanks to them, also in the next summer the tableland will look absolutely amazing.
If you have never visited this area before, don't miss the opportunity to discover this place in its beauty.... just visit castelluccio di Norcia and its area!
