The Romaeuropa Festival

Born in 1986, Romaeuropa is one of the most prestigious Italian and European festivals, aiming to create a space where contemporary culture and different forms of expression can be showcased in a spectacular programme that includes dance, theater, music, cinema, meetings with artists, visual arts and cutting-edge technological creativity.

What makes Romaeuropa stand out from other European festivals is its emphasis on bridging the gap between niche and mass public by hosting a variety of events where exhibitions and shows of well-known artists are mixed with the work of young talents. Thanks to Romaeuropa Festival, every year the Italian capital goes back to its ancient role of cradle of civilisation where culture and art from across the world come together.

Romaeuropa Foundation.

The festival is organised and promoted by Romaeuropa Foundation, one of the most distinguished cultural institutions in Italy, devoted to the promotion of art, theater, dance and contemporary music. Founded thanks to a Franco-Italian initiative, the foundation’s mission is to bring to a wide audience the best contemporary art from all over the world, as well as to increase awareness of the great masters and young talents in the field of performing arts. The foundation also serves as a national agency for the promotion of dance, focused on the preservation of contemporary Italian dance culture.

In 2003 Roma Tre University entrusted Romaeuropa Foundation with the management of a special place of the university – the Palladium – an area with a strong identity and a point of reference for the cultural scene in Rome.

Over the past years the foundation has hosted some remarkable events and programmes, including a three-year training course in collaboration with the IUSM (University Institute of Sports Science) in 2001, a French festival dedicated to dance in schools, and the creation in 2002 of a Multimedia Platform of Contemporary Dance on digital media.

The foundation has also established partnerships with Italian institutions such La Sapienza University, Roma Tre University, the MAXXI (the National Museum of XXI Century Arts) and Cro.me. (the Chronicle of the Spectacle and Memory).

Every year the Romaeuropa Festival takes place in autumn and this year it is scheduled from September 20th to December 2nd.

One of the most interesting events of Romaeuropa Festival is Digital Life, a project launched in 2010 bringing together art and the most advanced technology. Digital Life features visual art, digital art, performing arts and photography, with the aim of reaching the fourth dimension of creation. The extraordinary opportunities offered by these practices have already had a significant impact on the art world, revolutionising and encouraging a multi-sensory approach between artists and the audience.

The headquarters of the festival is the Opificio Romaeuropa, an open and modular space, which allows for the presentation of performances and screenings, meetings, and conferences. The Italian name Opificio refers to an old factory, which was set in the space used today by the foundation. The Opificio is located in the heart of the Ostiense neighbourhood in Rome, which is an area under transformation, where old factories have been replaced by new places for culture and art. However, this Festival takes place also in other important Theatre of the city, such as the Brancaccio, the Argentina, the Macro, the Olimpico and so on.

If you are planning a holiday to Rome in the next months, don’t forget to visit the spaces of Romaeuropa Foundation to enjoy some of the spectacular exhibitions, performances and shows of this year’s Festival.
